Asvattaha
The asvattha (fiscus religiosa), the holy fig tree, is said to
have issued forth from indra and is considered to be the best of trees. The eternal tree
of life with its branches below (in this world) and the roots above (in god) is described
as an asvattha in the hindu scriptures. There is a celestial asvattha tree under which the
gods gather. So, the holy men, gods on earth, are fond of sitting under an asvattha tree.
It is supposed to be endowed with magical powers. Childless women worship it and
circumambulate it with thehope and faith of being granted children. Its wood is made use
of, for preparing the sacrificial fire (through arani)
